Mecklin Wood

The woodland paths through Mecklin Wood are properly atmospheric - tall conifers filtering the light, with just enough undergrowth to make you feel properly away from things. It's a working forest more than a manicured country estate, so expect muddy stretches and the occasional felled tree blocking the route. Walkers will get the most from it, especially those after a solid two-hour circuit without crowds. The terrain is gentle enough for reasonably fit families with older kids, though younger ones might flag on the longer loops.

There's something satisfying about the quiet here. No visitor centre, no admission fees that I could find - you just park up near Holmrook and go. The trails wind through stands of spruce and larch, occasionally opening to views across the Cumbrian fells. It's not dramatic stuff, and the appeal wears thin if you're after riverside drama or proper summit views. But if you've got a base at Fisherground Campsite nearby and want to burn off a morning without driving anywhere, it'll do the job.

Best visited in late spring or early autumn when the paths are driest. Summer can be boggy. Don't expect signposting that tells you much - OS map or a good walking app is essential. Fits neatly into a broader Cumbrian walking holiday, though it's a supporting act rather than the main event.
