Meallan Odhar

The walk up Meallan Odhar isn't technically difficult, but it's relentless. Starting from Kyle, you're looking at a steady climb through moorland and rough grass - nothing technical, just knackering. The peak itself sits at 2,164 feet, and on a clear day the views across the Highlands are genuinely arresting. You can see right across to Skye on good weather, and the surrounding ridges and glens stretch out properly wild below you.

This is one for people who actually enjoy walking, not just casual strollers after a twenty-minute ramble. You'll need proper boots and at least half a day - the ascent alone takes a couple of hours from the road. There's no interpretation, no facilities, no café waiting at the top. Just you, the wind, and a vast amount of Scottish landscape.

Who gets the most from it? Hillwalkers after a moderate challenge, photography types chasing that golden hour light, and anyone after genuine solitude in proper Highland terrain. Families with young kids will probably find it a slog. Locals from Glenshiel Campsite, just over three miles away, have decent access if you're basing yourself there - it's an excellent spot to park up and explore the surrounding peaks without driving about constantly.

Go when the weather's settled. A clag day leaves you staring into cloud for your effort, which rather defeats the purpose. Early autumn and late spring are your best bets.
