Meall Tarsuinn

The walk up Meall Tarsuinn is a proper Highland experience without the slog of the bigger peaks. Near Crieff, this 775-metre mountain sits on the edge of the Trossachs and rewards you with views across Perthshire that stretch for miles on a clear day.

You're looking at a steady two to three hours up and back depending on fitness. The path is well-trodden but genuinely wild - no crowding like you get on Ben Ledi. It's the sort of walk that suits anyone with reasonable legs and a decent boot, families included if the kids are game for three hours outdoors. The terrain switches between open moorland and forest, so there's variety to keep you moving.

Go midweek if possible. Weekends bring the lot up here, and the car park at the trailhead gets rammed. Early autumn is cracking - the light's golden, and you won't be melting in the sun. Winter can be brutal if the snow's come early.

If you're staying at Braidhaugh Holiday Lodge near Crieff, you're perfectly placed. The mountain's a straight drive away, maybe thirty minutes, and it makes an excellent half-day excursion that won't kill a week's itinerary. Pair it with walking around Strathearn or heading into Crieff itself for dinner. It's not a "destination peak" in its own right, but as part of a Perthshire trip, it's absolutely worth a morning.
