Meall nan Loth

The walk up Meall nan Loth from Pitlochry is one of those Scottish climbs that feels properly rewarding without demanding mountaineering experience. It's a modest peak at 897 metres, so don't expect Alpine drama, but the views back down towards Pitlochry and across the Tummel Valley are worth the effort.

The route isn't particularly long - most people tick it off in three to four hours including summit time - which makes it ideal if you're not looking to sacrifice an entire day. The ascent is fairly steady rather than relentlessly steep, though there's nothing easy about it either. Come in decent weather and you'll see why the area attracts walkers year-round.

This works well for anyone staying at Blair Castle Caravan Park, which sits just down the road. You can be on the hill within twenty minutes of leaving your pitch. It's the sort of walk that appeals to established hikers as much as fit families looking for something more challenging than a woodland stroll but not a full-day expedition. Lone walkers often tackle it too.

There's no visitor facility at the summit, so bring water and snacks. The climb is best tackled from May onwards when the ground isn't boggy. Pitlochry itself has plenty of shops and cafes if you need provisions before heading out.

The peak sits well within reach of other Tayside walks, so if you're basing yourself in the area for a week, Meall nan Loth makes a solid mid-week outing between bigger days on the hills.
