Mains of Fincastle

The Mains of Fincastle sits just outside Pitlochry as a proper piece of Roman Scotland - though you'll need to know where to look. This isn't a polished visitor attraction with interpretive boards and a gift shop. What you get instead is the outline of a Roman fort from around 80 AD, when the empire was pushing north under Agricola. The earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking at: ditches and ramparts that once housed Roman soldiers keeping watch over Perthshire.

Historyfolk will find this far more rewarding than casual tourists. It's a small site, honestly - you're looking at maybe 20 minutes on foot to take in the layout properly. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no facilities, so bring the ordinance survey map and work it out yourself. The landscape around it tells the story better than any plaque could: open moorland with views back towards the Tummel Valley.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - River Tilt Park, Blair Castle, Faskally Woods, or Milton Of Fonab - this makes an easy morning's walk from Pitlochry itself. Pair it with a proper day at Blair Castle or a longer trek along the Tay for a fuller picture of the Highlands. Don't expect crowds or comfort, but if Roman forts and quiet archaeology appeal to you, it's worth the detour.
