Conbhar

The walk up Conbhar from Pitlochry isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. This modest peak sits just north of the town, offering views across the Tummel Valley that justify the effort - on a clear day, you can see for miles across Perthshire's rolling landscape.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical climb, taking around two hours return from the town centre. The path winds through mixed woodland before opening out to moorland near the summit. The actual top is unremarkable in the way Scottish peaks often are - a cairn, some trig point, and then just space and views.

Really, it's the kind of walk that works well if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley Holiday Park or Blair Castle Caravan Park are both within a couple of miles - and you want a proper morning out without committing to a full day on the hills. Families with teenagers will manage it fine. Young kids might find the initial climb tiresome, though the descent is easy enough.

The Pitlochry area itself has plenty to keep you occupied beyond one hill - the dam, the theatre, the distillery - so Conbhar works best as part of a longer stay rather than a specific destination. Go early to beat the crowds, and time it for decent weather since the whole point is the views. On a foggy day, you're just trudging uphill through cloud for no reward.
