Meall nan Eun sits at 652 metres above Pitlochry, a proper hill rather than a mountain, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a walk in the park. The ascent kicks up quite steeply in places, and you'll want good boots and a weather eye on the sky before heading out.

The view from the top is the real draw here. On a clear day you can see right across Perthshire's landscape - rolling forest, distant glens, and on lucky occasions, the Highlands beyond. The summit itself is unremarkable, just moorland and the odd cairn, but the 360-degree perspective makes the graft worthwhile.

This is squarely a walkers' hill. It's not a casual stroll, and families with young kids might find the 2-3 hour round trip (depending on fitness) a bit much. The path can be boggy and poorly marked in places, so navigation skills help. Allow a full morning or early afternoon, and start early if possible - the weather can turn quickly up here.

Pitlochry itself is right on the doorstep, with Kilvrecht Campsite just 5.7 miles away offering solid facilities if you're basing yourself in the area. Combine it with easier riverside walks lower down, and you've got a proper mixed itinerary. Free to climb, obviously - just turn up and get on with it.
