Meall Mòr

The walk up Meall Mòr from Arrochar is straightforward enough, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. This Arrochar Alps peak sits at 901 metres and offers proper views across Loch Long and towards Ben Ime if the weather behaves itself. Most people tackle it as part of the three-peak circuit - The Cobbler and Ben Vain tag along nicely - which makes for a full day out.

You're looking at roughly three to four hours for Meall Mòr alone, depending on fitness and how often you stop for breath. The path is well-trodden and the terrain's manageable, though it gets boggy lower down and rocky near the summit. Families with confident walkers will cope fine; younger kids might find it a slog.

The real appeal here is the landscape. Argyll's dramatic and moody, especially when clouds roll in off the water. On a clear day you genuinely get a sense of scale - the Firth of Clyde spreads out below, and you can pick out other peaks for miles. On a grey one, it's atmospheric rather than spectacular, but that's the Scottish Highlands for you.

Camp at Beinglas Campsite just down the road and you're perfectly positioned. It's 4.5 miles away and unpretentious - somewhere to pitch a tent and head straight out walking. Loch Lomond Holiday Park is slightly further but offers more facilities if you're after something less basic. Either way, Meall Mòr works as a serious half-day venture during a hiking-focused park holiday.
