Meall Gorm

The walk up Meall Gorm from Ballater is one of those Scottish Highland outings that rewards you properly without requiring mountaineering skills. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical climb, which means you can actually enjoy the views instead of worrying about your footing.

The summit sits at around 650 metres and the path is well-defined. On a clear day you're looking across Deeside towards the Cairngorms - genuinely impressive territory. The moorland approach takes you through landscape that feels properly wild without being hostile, and you'll likely have the place largely to yourself even on weekends.

Braemar Caravan Park lies just a few miles south, making this a natural day out if you're staying in the area. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's no admission charge - it's open access land, which is one of the joys of Scottish hills.

It's best visited outside peak midges season, so autumn through to early summer works well. Families with teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find it a bit of a slog. Walkers after something with a genuine sense of accomplishment and a proper panorama will find it time well spent. The real test is weather - low cloud can render the views useless, so pick your day with care. Ballater itself is a useful base for supplies and refreshment afterwards.
