Meall Glasail Mòr

The walk up Meall Glasail Mòr demands respect, but the payoff is a proper Cairngorms experience without the crowds you'll find on bigger peaks. Starting from around Ballater, you're looking at a steep ascent through heather and granite, with views that open up dramatically as you climb higher. On a clear day, the vista south towards Braemar and west across the mountain range justifies every breathless moment.

This isn't a casual stroll. Most walkers allow three to four hours return, depending on fitness, and you'll need decent boots - the terrain gets boggy lower down, then rocky as you gain height. The peak itself sits at around 2,200 feet, which means it's manageable year-round, though winter brings its own challenges if you're not experienced on snowy slopes.

Historically minded types might not find much on the mountain itself, but the landscape tells its story - you're walking through land shaped by glaciers and inhabited for centuries. Families with older kids who've done a few hills will find it rewarding rather than soul-destroying.

The proximity means you can start early without hours of driving, and the park itself puts you in prime hiking territory. Go early in the day if possible - morning light catches the landscape beautifully, and you'll beat the midges in summer.
