Meall Glasail Beag

The walk up Meall Glasail Beag is one of those quiet Cairngorms ascents that doesn't get the crowds of its more famous neighbours. Starting from near Ballater, you're looking at a proper hill walk rather than a stroll - expect rough terrain and a decent climb, though nothing that'll defeat a reasonably fit hillwalker. The summit's modest by Highland standards, but the views across the Dee Valley and towards the Grampians are genuinely worth the effort. On a clear day you can see for miles.

This one's best suited to walkers with some experience and decent boots. It's not a family-friendly path - the terrain can be boggy and the ascent relentless in places. Allow three to four hours for a comfortable round trip. The weather changes fast up here, so come prepared with waterproofs and map skills. Early morning is quieter, and autumn gives the best light.

If you're camping at Braemar Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a cracking half-day outing. Pair it with other Cairngorms walks in the area - you're well-positioned for exploring Lochnagar or heading towards the Dee Valley trails. The nearest town facilities are in Ballater itself, so stock up before you head out. No frills, no facilities on the mountain, but that's part of the appeal.
