Meall Buidhe

The walk up Meall Buidhe takes you through some of the Cairngorms' most rewarding terrain without demanding the serious commitment of the higher peaks. It's a proper hill walk rather than a stroll - don't let the name fool you - but it delivers genuine mountain air and views that justify the effort.

From Aviemore, this sits within striking distance of the main Cairngorms massif. The approach winds through native pine forest before opening onto moorland, and by the time you're near the summit you've got sight lines across to bigger neighbours like Braeriach. On a clear day it's cracking. On a misty day, less so - but that's Scottish mountains for you.

You'll want two to three hours there and back depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. It works brilliantly as a half-day objective if you're staying at one of the local parks like Dalraddy, just up the road from Aviemore. Families with confident walkers (aged 10+, ideally) will find it manageable, though younger kids might struggle with the steeper sections.

The path is boggy in places and can be muddy for weeks after rain, so good boots are non-negotiable. Autumn and spring tend to offer the best going underfoot. It's free, obviously - this is Scottish hillwalking - and there's a car park near the starting point.

If you're doing a week based around the Cairngorms, pair this with easier valley walks to give your legs a break. It's substantial enough to feel like proper mountain time, but not so demanding that it eats your whole day.
