Meall an t-Slugain

This 2,900-foot hill sits just west of Ballater, rising steeply from the Deeside valley with the kind of views that justify the huffing and puffing. On a clear day you're looking across the Cairngorms - proper mountain country, not the rolling moorland you might expect from Aberdeenshire. The walk takes about two hours up and down if you're reasonably fit, following a path that gets progressively rougher as you climb. No scrambling required, but it's a genuine hill, not a stroll.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The climb suits anyone comfortable with steep paths and want to bag a peak without committing to a full day in the hills. Families with young kids might find it a bit much - the gradient is relentless and there's nowhere really to sit halfway and have a snack without feeling exposed. The summit itself is modest, just a cairn and space to stand, but the views down into Braemar and across to Ben Avon make it worthwhile.

Go early on a dry day. Afternoon mist rolls in regularly and kills the views entirely. Free to access - there's roadside parking near the trailhead on the A93. If you're based at Braemar Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a proper morning adventure before lunch. It's the kind of hill that rewards preparation - bring a map, proper boots, and waterproofs even if the forecast says otherwise.
