Meadows II

There's not much left of Meadows II these days, but that's rather the point. This Essex site near Ingatestone is one of those places where history has literally been buried - a Roman villa that's been excavated and then, sensibly, left to the elements again. What you're looking at is essentially an archaeological site with the remains of what was once a substantial Romano-British settlement, and yes, it's fairly low-key as attractions go.

The walk around the site takes maybe forty minutes if you're taking it slowly, reading any interpretation boards and actually thinking about what you're seeing. It's more contemplative than thrilling. History types will find it genuinely interesting - there's something about standing where Romans once lived, even if all that's visible are ground-level foundations and the odd fragment. Families with young children might find it a bit abstract; there's no interactive element, and it won't hold attention for hours. Walkers passing through the area could easily slot it in.

It's free to visit, which is the main thing in its favour. The nearest accommodation of any real substance is The Courts Campsite just 4.5 miles away or Stuarts Wood Campsite at 5.1 miles - both solid bases if you're making a longer Essex trip. Hoe Mill Lock, six miles out, offers canal-side camping for a different pace entirely.

Go if you're already in the area and have an hour spare. Don't reroute your holiday specially for it. It's the kind of place that rewards quiet attention rather than spectacle.
