Meadow Lake

Water this clear and still doesn't happen by accident. Meadow Lake sits just outside Ringwood, a proper freshwater spot that draws walkers and families looking for somewhere to actually pause rather than just pass through. The lake itself is shallow enough to feel safe, ringed by meadow grasses and the kind of bankside vegetation that keeps things looking natural rather than manicured.

It's a solid half-hour wander from the car park, though the path is flat enough that you won't spend the whole time cursing your choice of footwear. If you're camping at Hill Cottage Farm over in Fordingbridge - only twenty minutes away - this makes for an easy morning outing without the crowds you'd hit at the bigger Dorset attractions. Kids will potter about looking for dragonflies and water birds; adults will actually enjoy standing still for five minutes.

There's nothing fancy here. No café, no visitor centre, no entry fee as far as I can establish. Bring a picnic if you want lunch, bring binoculars if you're into birds. The walk loops round nicely, so you're not retracing your steps the whole way back. Summer weekends can get busy with locals who know the spot, so aim for a weekday if you can.

Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the New Forest area and fancy something low-key. It's not a destination in itself, but paired with a park stay nearby, it ticks the box for a peaceful afternoon without any fuss.
