Maud Foster Mill

The tallest working windmill in England stands on the edge of Boston like some kind of Victorian industrial monument. Maud Foster Mill is a proper sight - a seven-storey red-brick tower that's been grinding flour since 1821, and it still does on occasion, which is rather brilliant for a building that's over 200 years old.

You can actually go inside and climb the stairs - all of them, mind you, which gets properly tiring by floor five. The interior is a maze of wooden beams, giant cogs and flour dust that's somehow still hanging about despite the centuries. The views from the top across the Fens are genuinely worth the climb, especially on a clear day when you can see for miles across flat, drained marshland.

It appeals most to industrial history enthusiasts and anyone interested in how Victorian engineering actually functioned. Kids find it moderately interesting for about an hour - the climbing novelty wears off once they realise there's nothing dramatic at the top, just a long view of very flat countryside.

If you're basing yourself at Orchard Holiday Park or Big Sky Hideaway Camping, the mill is just a short drive into Boston. It's the sort of place you'd slot in between a morning at the shops and lunch. Check ahead before visiting as opening can be seasonal - best rung in advance. Admission is modest if charged at all.
