Matlock Parks Country Park

The River Derwent cuts through a proper gorge here, limestone cliffs rising either side, and you can actually walk right along the water's edge. Matlock Parks Country Park is the sort of place that justifies a morning's outing if you're camped at Packhorse Farm or one of the caravan sites nearby - and there are several within spitting distance.

It's not a manicured attraction with tea rooms and gift shops. This is a genuine nature reserve where you'll spot kingfishers if you're lucky, and the woodland paths are genuine enough to feel like actual exploration rather than a curated experience. The gorge itself is the main draw - steep banks, mature trees, the occasional bench where you can sit and listen to the river. Most people do the main loop in about 90 minutes, though you can extend it if you're keen.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. Small children might find it a bit samey after the first half-hour unless they're the type to poke about in streams. The paths are uneven in places - proper hiking boots worth wearing rather than trainers.

It's free access, which is always welcome. Spring and early autumn are best - summer can be muggy down in the gorge, and winter floods make some sections iffy. Coming here works well as a morning trip before heading into Matlock town itself or using it as a base for exploring the wider Peak District from one of the nearby holiday parks.
