Matlock Bath River Path & Park

The River Derwent cuts through Matlock Bath like a ribbon, and walking its banks is one of those rare stretches where you can genuinely forget you're in the East Midlands at all. The path hugs the water, limestone cliffs rising up on either side, and on a decent day the light bounces off the stone in a way that makes you understand why the Victorians came here to take the waters.

Go early if you can. Summer weekends pull in day-trippers from across the Midlands, and it gets a bit shoulder-to-shoulder near the village. Spring's probably the sweet spot - water levels are decent and you'll dodge the crowds. Allow a couple of hours for a proper meander, though you could do a quick loop in forty minutes if time's tight.
