Matley Ridge

Gentle slopes through heather and gorse lead up to one of the New Forest's most accessible high points, where panoramic views stretch across the entire national park. Matley Ridge isn't particularly tall - this is Hampshire, not the Highlands - but what it lacks in drama it makes up for in sheer scope of countryside on show.

Walkers of all abilities will find the climb manageable, though proper footwear helps when the ground gets boggy after rain. The ridge walk itself takes about an hour return from the nearest car park, making it perfect for families with older children who fancy a bit of elevation without the full-day commitment.

From the top, you'll spot the Solent glinting in the distance on clear days, with the Isle of Wight beyond. More immediately, the famous New Forest ponies often graze the slopes below, completely unbothered by the steady stream of ramblers passing overhead.

Location-wise, you're perfectly placed for exploring deeper into the forest from any of the nearby campsites. Lyndhurst sits just a few miles away for supplies and proper pubs. The ridge works brilliantly as a gentle warm-up hike if you're staying at Matley Wood Campsite practically on the doorstep, or as an afternoon stretch-the-legs walk from the larger sites like Hollands Wood or Roundhill.
