The walk up Maryton Law takes about an hour if you're moving at a decent pace, and it's genuinely one of those hills that rewards the effort without demanding mountaineering skills. Starting from near Arbroath, you climb through farmland and moorland with the Angus landscape stretching out below you - on a clear day you can see right across to the Sidlaws and beyond. The summit itself is modest but the views are anything but. From up there you understand why this corner of Aberdeenshire has been fought over and farmed for centuries.

It's the sort of walk that works brilliantly for families with older kids - nothing too technical, enough of a challenge to feel like a proper outing, and the kind of vista that makes them forget they were complaining about their legs ten minutes earlier. If you're staying at The Grange Glamping just down the road, it's an ideal morning or afternoon adventure before heading back for a fire or a proper meal.

Wear decent boots because the ground gets boggy near the top, and don't bother on a day when the cloud's sitting low - you'll just be walking through grey nothingness. But time it right and you've got a cracking spot for lunch and views that make the Angus coast feel like your own private domain. The kind of hill where you feel like you've actually achieved something without spending all day on your feet.
