Marton Park

The wetland at Marton Park sits just outside York, a proper working nature reserve where you'll actually see birds rather than read about them in a guidebook. It's not vast - you can cover the main paths in an hour or so - but the shallow pools and reed beds pull in everything from lapwings to lesser spotted woodpeckers depending on the season. Spring and autumn are best if you're serious about spotting, though winter brings the big flocks of wigeon and pintail.

This is walker and birder territory. Bring binoculars and a decent camera if you're into that sort of thing. Families with older kids who can manage a quiet morning will find it engaging; toddlers might lose interest after the first pool. The paths are manageable year-round, though it gets boggy after heavy rain.

It works brilliantly as a half-day stop during a caravan holiday in the area. Ravensdale Glamping Retreats is under two miles away if you want something with a bit of comfort, or York Meadows over in the city proper for a more traditional base. The Hideaway@Baxby Manor is another solid option if you're willing to be a touch further out.

Access appears to be free, and there's no set hours - it's the kind of place you turn up to when it suits you. Just check conditions before you go, especially after wet weather. Expect to spend time standing still watching rather than hiking briskly; that's rather the point.
