Marshalls Park

You'll find yourself walking through proper woodland the moment you arrive at Marshalls Park, just outside Braintree. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick lap - open grassland gives way to tree-lined paths, and there's water running through the middle which keeps things feeling alive even in dry spells.

The reserve works best for families who don't mind a bit of mud underfoot and walkers after a gentle couple of hours away from the main roads. Birdwatchers get a genuine kick out of it too; bring binoculars and you'll spot far more than you'd manage without them. Kids will be entertained by the open spaces for running about, though don't expect facilities or formal attractions - this is nature reserve in its most straightforward sense.

Allow a solid hour to an hour and a half to explore without rushing. The ground can get waterlogged in winter, so spring and summer are when it's at its best. There's no charge and no set opening hours as far as I can tell, which means you can visit on your own schedule.

If you're based at Stocks Farm Camping or Golden Grove just down the road, it makes an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere in the area. It doesn't demand a full day, but it's genuinely worth an afternoon if you want something low-key and green without driving far from your caravan.
