Market Cross

You'll find this stone cross sitting in the heart of Newbury's old market square, a proper medieval survivor that's been watching traders and townspeople for centuries. It's the kind of thing you walk past without thinking, until you actually stop and look at what you're standing in front of.

These days it's surrounded by modern shops and cafes, which slightly undercuts the atmosphere, but on a quiet morning it's easy to imagine the bustle - livestock, merchants, the smell of produce. The stonework itself is genuinely old, rebuilt and repaired over the centuries but unmistakably medieval at its heart.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. Children might manage five minutes before wanting to move on, unless you're the type to tell them stories about medieval market days. It's free to look at, obviously, and requires no time commitment - it's literally a stop on the way through town.
