Walking into Marke Wood feels like stepping away from Kent's coastal bustle entirely. It's a proper nature reserve that rewards people who like a gentle ramble without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. The woodland trails are straightforward - nothing technical, just woodland floor and the occasional muddy patch depending on the weather.

This is the sort of place where you'll spot birds if you're quiet about it, and the canopy does its job on drizzly days. Kids won't be bored exactly, but they'll need to be the type who enjoy spotting wildlife rather than expecting play equipment. Walkers between Deal and Sandwich will find it's a solid break from the flat coastal path, offering proper shade and a bit of elevation without being strenuous.

I'd allow an hour to ninety minutes here rather than making it the whole afternoon. The reserve doesn't sprawl enough for that, but it's ideal if you're staying at Kingsdown Camping or Hawthorn Farm Holiday Park nearby - close enough for a morning walk before heading into Deal for lunch. Bring decent shoes because the paths are manageable but muddy stretches catch people out.

It's free to wander, which is the way nature reserves should work. No visitor centre, no café, so come prepared with water. The real value is that it's genuinely quiet - you won't see hordes of school groups or Instagram crowds. Just woodland, birdsong, and the occasional surprised rabbit.
