Marine Cove Gardens

The Somerset coast around Burnham-on-Sea has a particular charm - mudflats, salt marshes, and that wide-open sky that makes you forget you're in England. Marine Cove Gardens sits right in this landscape, a nature reserve where you can actually watch the estuary change with the tides rather than just read about it in a guidebook.

It's a straightforward spot for getting close to coastal wildlife. Waders, wildfowl, and if you're lucky, seals hauling out on the banks. The paths are flat and accessible, which matters if you're staying at one of the holiday parks clustered nearby - Lakeside is barely half a mile away, and Haven Burnham-on-Sea only a ten-minute walk. Bring binoculars. Seriously.

Birders will get the most from a visit here, particularly during spring and autumn migrations when the reserve becomes properly busy with passage birds. Families with young kids might find an hour enough unless they're genuinely into ornithology. The scenery won't blow your mind - this is working estuary landscape, not chocolate-box stuff - but there's something honest about it.

Best visited at high tide if you want dramatic water views, though low tide reveals the mudflats where birds feed. The weather can turn quickly on the coast, so go prepared. Allow an hour minimum for a proper wander, longer if you're spending time with a scope. Given how close the holiday parks are, it's an easy add-on to a seaside break rather than a destination in itself.
