Marham Fen

The flat Norfolk landscape doesn't prepare you for how absorbing Marham Fen actually is. This working forest sits east of King's Lynn, and it's the kind of place where you quickly lose sense of time among the conifers and open water. There's genuine woodland here - proper walking country with marked trails that take you through different habitats, from dense tree cover to more open fen areas where the light changes everything.

It works best for walkers and nature spotters rather than young kids looking for theme park thrills. Birdwatchers come regularly; the water draws all sorts, and the quiet means you might actually see them. The forest floor is soft underfoot most of the year, which is fine, but after heavy rain certain paths get boggy. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to feel you've been somewhere, though you can do a shorter loop in forty minutes.

Access and facilities aren't heavily publicised - come prepared with a map or download something beforehand. Parking appears to be free and straightforward, though the site isn't set up like a visitor attraction with signage everywhere. That's part of its charm, honestly. It feels less managed than some nature reserves.
