Maresfield Recreation Ground

A proper slice of Sussex countryside just outside Lewes, Maresfield Recreation Ground is the sort of place locals know about and visitors often walk straight past. It's a working nature reserve - grassland, woodland, and meadow mixed together - where you might spot deer, spot birds you can't name, or simply sit on a bench and hear nothing but trees for a bit.

The appeal depends entirely on what you want from an afternoon. Keen birdwatchers and wildflower enthusiasts will find genuine value here, especially spring through summer. Families with younger kids might get an hour out of it before someone asks when the ice cream arrives. The site sits well alongside the two superb campsites nearby - The Secret Campsite and Wild Boar Wood Campsite are both proper destinations in their own right, and Maresfield works as a morning or late-afternoon extension rather than the main event.

Worth the detour? If you're already camping in the area and you like being outdoors without fanfare, absolutely. As a standalone trip from Lewes town centre, it depends on whether you're genuinely interested in what lives in an old English meadow. No facilities, no crowds, no pretence. Just space.
