Mappa Mundi

A medieval map drawn on a single sheet of vellum around 1300 - that's what you're staring at inside Hereford Cathedral. The Mappa Mundi is genuinely extraordinary, a map of the known world rendered in ink and gold leaf, with Jerusalem dead centre and Africa upside down. It takes a moment to adjust your brain to the logic of it, but once you do, you're looking at how people actually understood geography nearly 800 years ago.

You'll need to book ahead and pay to see it properly - it lives in a dedicated exhibition space attached to the cathedral, climate-controlled and carefully lit. Allow a good hour minimum if you're genuinely interested in medieval cartography and theology. Rush through it in twenty minutes if you're not. Families with older kids do well here, particularly if they've studied medieval history. Younger children often find the static display a bit heavy unless you can keep up a running narrative about monsters and imaginary lands.

The map itself is the whole story. There's supporting context about how it was made and what the symbols mean, but you're really here for the object itself. It's one of those rare things that genuinely lives up to the hype.

If you're camping at Ridge Hill, Broadmeadow, or any of the sites within five kilometres of Hereford, the Mappa Mundi works as a proper rainy-day outing. Combine it with a walk around the cathedral precinct and you've got a solid morning. Winter's actually the better time to visit - quieter, and the light through the exhibition windows is proper lovely.
