Maol na Coille Mòire

The walk up Maol na Coille Mòire from the Isle of Mull is straightforward enough, but the summit delivers the sort of views that make you forget your calf muscles exist. You're looking across to Ben More, down over the Sound of Mull, and on a clear day the whole landscape opens up properly - proper expansive stuff.

It's not a technical climb, which means families with older kids and regular walkers will find it manageable without needing ropes or experience. The terrain is moorland and rough grass, so decent boots matter. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you loiter at the top taking photos.

The timing matters here - go early or wait for decent weather. Mull's cloud cover can roll in fast, and you'll have climbed for nothing if the mist settles. Spring and autumn tend to be your best bets, though summer brings longer daylight if you're organised.

It's the sort of walk that works well as part of a longer Mull itinerary rather than a destination on its own - pair it with exploring the coast or heading to nearby Ben More if you've got the legs for it.
