Maol am Fheidh

The walk up Maol am Fheidh takes you straight into proper Highland country, just above Arrochar. It's a modest peak at 901 metres - nothing that demands climbing experience - but it delivers views across Loch Long that make the effort worthwhile. The ridge path is well-trodden and moves quickly, taking maybe two hours from base to summit for most walkers. On a clear day you get the whole length of the loch spread beneath you, with Ben Arthur looming to the side like an old friend.

This works brilliantly for families who've got decent hill legs but aren't ready for the serious peaks nearby. Kids aged eight and up will manage it without complaint, especially if you build in a lunch stop at the top. The terrain is grass and scree rather than technical scrambling, so boots matter more than rope skills.

If you're camping at Glenfinart or Inverbeg - both five minutes down the road - this makes a solid afternoon outing. Combine it with walks around Loch Eck or venture towards the higher stuff around Ben Ime if you're there for the week. The caravan parks have good facilities for drying out gear afterwards, which matters given Scottish weather.

Go midweek if possible. Weekends bring crowds from Glasgow, and the car park fills quickly. Summer months give you the longest daylight window, but spring walking can be cleaner underfoot. It's free, obviously - you're just turning up and walking.
