Mansey Common

A quiet woodland patch between Newark and the better-known Sherwood Forest, Mansey Common is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's proper woodland - scattered oaks, dense undergrowth, the occasional clearing where light breaks through the canopy. Walking here feels genuinely removed from the world, even though Newark is only minutes away.

The appeal is straightforward: a few decent footpaths that wind through mature trees, ideal for a couple of hours if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks. Dog walkers love it. Families with younger children might find it a bit limited - there's no playground infrastructure or defined attractions, just trees and paths. For serious hikers it's more warm-up than main event, but that's rather the point. It's not trying to be Sherwood's showier cousin.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though facilities are minimal. Go on a dry day if you can - the woodland floor gets boggy in winter. Spring is when the place genuinely sings, with bluebells and emerging growth after the bare months. Early morning or late afternoon gives you decent odds of encountering deer.

If you're staying at Center Parcs Sherwood Forest or Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest - both barely four miles away - Mansey Common makes a proper alternative to the crowds. It's a genuine forest rather than a managed attraction, which means it works if you want space and quiet rather than waymarked trails and visitor facilities.
