Manor Ash Moats

A few kilometres outside Newbury lies Manor Ash Moats, a rather understated archaeological site that won't take long to visit but rewards a bit of effort. What you're looking at is a medieval moated manor - essentially the earthworks left behind by a house surrounded by defensive ditches and water. The moats themselves are still clearly visible, creating a distinctive ring around what was once someone's home, probably dating back several centuries.

It's the sort of place that appeals mainly to archaeology enthusiasts or walkers exploring the Newbury area. The site itself is free to access - there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, just the landscape doing the talking. You're realistically looking at 20 minutes to half an hour poking around, taking photos, and trying to imagine what the medieval dwelling looked like. Bring decent shoes if the ground's been wet; it can get boggy near the actual moat ditches.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Cherry Bird Country Park or Bishops Green Farm Campsite are both within walking distance - this makes for a decent morning detour before or after exploring Newbury itself. The town has more substantial attractions, so don't plan your entire trip around this. It's genuinely interesting if you're into medieval settlement patterns and local history, but it's not going to blow your mind if you're after dramatic ruins or interactive exhibits. Best visited as part of a broader walking route rather than a destination in itself.
