Maningham Wood

Walking into Maningham Wood near Redruth, you're stepping into proper Cornish woodland - the kind of place where the industrial heritage above ground gives way to something altogether quieter below. It's a nature reserve that feels genuinely removed from the tin-mining landscape that defines this part of Cornwall, with dense tree cover and a network of paths that reward a slow exploration.

You'll find bluebells if you time it right in spring, and the woodland floor is thick with ferns and moss year-round. Bird watchers tend to get more out of it than casual strollers - there's decent variety here if you know what you're listening for. Allow an hour or so for a proper wander; it's not vast, but it rewards unhurried walking. The paths can be muddy even days after rain, so decent boots matter.

Families with younger children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're keen on spotting wildlife. Older kids and keen naturalists will have a proper time of it. There's no facilities on-site that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day break from the holiday parks dotted nearby - Lanyon Holiday Park is only a few miles off. Pair it with other walking in the area if you're planning a full day out. The reserve itself is straightforward enough to explore without a guide, though the Redruth area has plenty of other mining heritage sites worth exploring if you want to make a longer trip of it.
