Maiden's Bower

The earthworks at Maiden's Bower sit quietly on a hillside just outside Durham, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. It's an Iron Age fort, roughly 2,000 years old, marked now by a series of defensive ditches and banks that snake across the grass - the sort of thing you walk right past without realizing what you're standing on. The site itself is small and unfenced, which means you can wander the ramparts properly rather than peer at them from a path.

Historically minded types will find it genuinely interesting. The layout tells you how people thought about defence back then, the positioning of those ditches meant something specific about threats and sight lines. But if you're expecting dramatic ruins or interpretive panels, you'll be disappointed - this is archaeology in its humblest form, just lumps and bumps in the turf.

Walking the site takes maybe 20 minutes if you're taking it seriously, longer if you're pottering about trying to work out what you're looking at. It's free to access and there's no fixed opening hours because there's nothing to lock. Go in daylight obviously, and the ground can be boggy after rain. From Durham itself it's a short drive or a decent walk if you're camped at one of the nearby parks like Finchale Abbey or Grove Farm.

Worth the trip if you're already staying in the area and fancy stretching your legs on something with actual historical meat on it. On its own though? Probably not a reason to detour unless Iron Age forts are your thing.
