Magdalen Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Colchester, Magdalen Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is exactly its appeal. The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter, the paths wind through mature trees, and there's genuine quiet if you time it right and avoid weekends.

It's ideal for a couple of hours if you're based at Rushbanks Farm Caravan & Camping Site nearby. Families with older kids will get on fine - the paths are manageable and there's enough space to let them run about without losing them entirely. Younger children might find it a bit samey after the first twenty minutes, if I'm honest. Walkers and anyone after a bit of forest air will find it properly restorative without the tourist crowds you get at the bigger beauty spots.

The woodland has that Suffolk character - open enough to breathe, dense enough to feel properly away. You'll see oaks, chestnuts, and patches where the canopy opens up to light. No dramatic viewpoints or dramatic drops, just good honest forest. Bring proper footwear if it's been wet; the paths can get boggy.

As a stopgap between caravan days, it works well. Close enough to Colchester that you're not spending the afternoon driving, far enough in to feel separated from town. Whether you're there for the forest itself or just need an excuse to get the kids out of the van for a bit, it does the job without fuss.
