Madame's Coppice

Madame's Coppice is a proper slice of ancient woodland just outside Shifnal in Shropshire, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working coppice - meaning the trees get managed traditionally - so you're walking through something that's been actively tended for generations rather than just left to do its own thing.

The woodland itself is thick with character. Paths meander between hazel and sweet chestnut, and depending on the season you'll either be crunching through beech leaves or navigating the boggy bits after rain. There's no visitor centre or signposting that screams "attraction," which is partly the appeal. You turn up, have a wander, enjoy the quiet.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this. It's not a destination you'd travel two hours for, but if you're staying at Stanmore Hall Touring Park just down the road - a cracking spot for a Shropshire base - it's absolutely worth an hour's ramble. Kids can handle it fine if they're used to muddy paths, though it's not designed for pushchairs and there's nothing to do once you've walked the circuit.

Allow a good hour to ninety minutes depending on how many paths you fancy exploring. Admission appears to be free, though access details can be patchy for smaller woodlands like this - worth checking locally before you go. Best visited in autumn when the light gets properly dramatic through the bare branches, or spring when everything's freshly green.
