Lynch Hill

The walk up Lynch Hill near Alton is brief but worthwhile if you're staying in the area. It's not the sort of peak that'll take your breath away - Hampshire hills don't really do drama - but from the top you get a proper sense of the surrounding countryside rolling away in waves of green. Twenty minutes of walking, maybe half an hour if you're not moving quickly, and you're at the summit. The views south toward Sussex are genuinely pleasing on a clear day, and on hazy ones it's still a decent spot to stop and reset.

Walkers will find this fits nicely into a loop around the North Downs, and families staying at Feather Down Manor Farm or Wigwam Holidays can knock it out without the kids whinging about distance. It's the sort of local walk that gives you a sense of the landscape without eating up half your day. No facilities to speak of, so bring water and maybe a packed lunch if you want to linger at the top.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are your best bet - muddy in winter, baking in July. The ascent isn't steep enough to be a proper challenge, but it's not a flat ramble either. Worth the detour if you're exploring Hampshire's quieter corners, though manage expectations. You're not coming here for Alpine drama; you're coming for an honest English hillside and some thinking time.
