You'll find yourself standing at the foot of a Neolithic long barrow on the North Downs near Aylesford - basically a 5,000-year-old pile of stones that's somehow still standing. Kit's Coty House, as locals call it, is three massive sarsen stones forming a chamber, the remnants of what was once a proper burial mound. It's atmospheric in the way only ancient sites can be: the stones are weathered smooth, lichened grey, and utterly indifferent to the centuries.

The walk from Aylesford takes about forty minutes across farmland, and honestly, that's half the appeal. You're not paying to shuffle through a visitor centre - you're just turning up at this Bronze Age monument as if you've stumbled on something genuinely forgotten. The stones themselves take maybe ten minutes to look at properly, but the views across the Medway Valley from the surrounding downland are worth twice the walk. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Archaeology enthusiasts will properly rate this. Families with young kids might find it a bit anticlimactic without context - there's no interpretation, no gift shop, just stones and countryside. But that's exactly why it works. The nearby Kits Coty Glamping is perfectly positioned if you want to stay close and explore the wider Downs. Worth the detour, especially if you're already rambling in the area.
