Lumb Hill

The walk up Lumb Hill from Hebden Bridge takes you straight into proper Pennine moorland, with the town dropping away below as you climb. It's not a huge summit - more of a solid ridge walk than a mountain expedition - but the views across the valley are genuinely worth the effort, especially on a clear day when you can pick out the stone villages scattered below.

The terrain is typical Yorkshire moorland: grass, heather, and rocky sections that can be boggy after rain. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking it at a steady pace, longer if you want to linger at the top. This is a walk for people who actually like walking rather than tourists after a photo opportunity. Families with capable legs will manage it fine, though younger children might find the moorland a bit bare and featureless.

Timing matters here. Morning light is cleaner, and if you go early you'll avoid the weekend crowds heading up from town. Autumn's cracking if you want golden moorland colours, but bring waterproofs whatever season you choose - Pennine weather turns on a sixpence.

It's also a natural stepping stone if you're linking several walks in the valley. Worth doing once you're in the area, rather than worth planning a trip around.
