Lullingstone Roman Villa

The remains of a substantial Roman house sit quietly in a valley near Sevenoaks, and the scale of what's been excavated here is genuinely impressive. Lullingstone Roman Villa dates to around 100 AD, and what you're walking through are the actual foundations and lower walls of a wealthy family's residence - complete with hypocaust heating systems and a proper bathhouse. The site's underground museum keeps the best finds close by: mosaics, pottery, and sculpture that tell you something real about who lived here and how they spent their time.

History enthusiasts will absolutely get their money's worth. The in-situ mosaic pavements are the main draw, and seeing them exactly where Roman feet once trod beats any museum display. The valley setting is lovely too - it feels removed from the modern world, which helps you actually imagine the place functioning as a home. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse once they've had a look around - there's not much here beyond the remains themselves, and an hour's thorough visit covers it. Walkers doing the Darent Valley Loop can easily tack this on as a stop.

English Heritage manages the site, so admission is charged - it's included on annual memberships. Allow 90 minutes if you're serious about reading the interpretive boards. The nearest proper base is Sevenoaks, though if you're staying at Thriftwood Country Park just four miles away, you're perfectly positioned to visit without the faffing about with car parks.
