Lulham Lake

The water at Lulham Lake sits dark and still, ringed by woodland that feels properly remote despite being barely two miles from Hereford's edge. It's a modest body of water - nothing like the vast reservoirs you'll find further into the Midlands - but that's rather the point. This is the sort of place locals know and tourists miss, which tends to work in its favour.

You can walk the perimeter if you're after a gentle circuit, though don't expect dramatic vistas or manicured paths. The appeal is quietness. Fishermen come here regularly, and you'll spot the occasional dog walker, but it never feels crowded. Wildlife watchers should bring binoculars - reed warblers and the odd kingfisher if you're lucky enough and patient enough.

The lake works best as a morning or evening pit-stop rather than a destination unto itself. Budget forty minutes to an hour, depending on how much you want to linger. There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, and no obvious admission charge - it's just... there. Bring a flask and a book if you're the type.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Preston's barely a mile away, Long Coppice even closer - it's an easy walk to clear your head before breakfast. Not thrilling, not Instagram-worthy, but genuinely pleasant. Hereford's county attractions like Symonds Yat are close enough for a proper day out if you want something with more teeth.
