Lowther Castle & Gardens

The ruins of Lowther Castle rise out of the Cumbrian landscape like something from a Gothic novel, though the reality is rather more theatrical than spooky. Built in the 1807 as a mock castle by the Lowther family - proper landowners with more money than sense - it's a deliberately dramatic folly that actually works. The shell stands intact enough to fire the imagination, and the gardens around it are genuinely lovely, with woodland walks and open parkland that give you breathing room.

What you're really doing here is wandering around Georgian aristocratic ambition. The castle itself isn't furnished or interactive - it's an exterior affair - but the grounds reward a couple of hours of pottering. There are designated walking routes, and the site feels genuinely peaceful, not crowded. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might find it a bit static unless they're keen on climbing and exploring ruins. History buffs and photographers will find plenty to chew on.

It's free to explore, which is the main draw, though I'd check opening times before heading out from Penrith. The location works brilliantly if you're based at Lowther Holiday Park or any of the caravan parks clustered within a few miles - it's practically on your doorstep and breaks up a week of holiday park routine without requiring a drive. Spring and early autumn are best; midwinter gets muddy, and high summer brings the crowds.
