Lower Lake

The water at Lower Lake sits impossibly still on a grey Lincolnshire afternoon, reflecting the sky like dark glass. It's one of two lakes at Rutland Water, though this one draws far fewer crowds than its famous neighbour, which makes it rather better if you're after some peace.

You can walk the perimeter - takes a solid couple of hours depending on your pace - and the paths are straightforward enough for families without becoming dull. The birdwatching here is genuinely decent. Bring binoculars and you might spot ospreys, herons, or if you're lucky, a kingfisher flashing past. There's something proper calming about standing on the bank with nothing but the lap of water and the occasional duck.

Stamford's just up the road, which is handy - proper Georgian market town with cafes where you can grab a coffee beforehand. The lake itself is free to access, though if you want to park nearby there's usually a small charge. Allow at least two hours if you're doing the full walk, less if you just want to potter about the accessible bits near the water's edge.

It works well as part of a Rutland Water circuit rather than a standalone trip. If you're staying at Stamford Meadows Glamping - which is excellent, mind you - this makes an easy morning or afternoon outing. Kids aged five and up will enjoy it without complaint. Younger ones might find the walk tedious. Don't expect drama or facilities; expect actual quiet.
