About Burghley House
Inside, the rooms are properly grand. High ceilings, painted walls, and enough portraits to remind you that these people took themselves seriously. The kitchens are fascinating if you're into that sort of thing - all those copper pots and the sheer logistics of feeding a house this size. You'll need at least three hours to do it justice, maybe more if you're the type to read every placard.
The grounds are what make it worth the trip though. The park spreads out in all directions, designed by Capability Brown, and it's genuinely lovely for a walk. The lake catches the light nicely on a clear day. Families with younger kids might find the house itself a bit heavy going, but the grounds? They'll run around happily enough.
Stamford, just down the road, is worth a visit in its own right - proper Georgian stone town. If you're staying at Stamford Meadows Glamping nearby, you're barely five minutes away. The Nest Glamping and Rockingham Forest Park offer good bases too if you want something more rural as your home base.
Admission isn't cheap, but the house rewards a proper look. Don't rush it.
