Lower Lairochs Wood

The woodland path at Lower Lairochs Wood winds through proper Perthshire country, quiet enough that you'll hear the burn running underneath the trees before you spot it. It's a working forest, so don't expect pristine manicured trails - you get real woodland walking, the kind where you notice the light changing through the canopy and the ground feels soft underfoot.

Walkers will appreciate the peace of it. This isn't a destination in itself - it's a solid hour's walk from Crieff if you've got time to kill and want something a bit more interesting than a road stroll. The trees are mature, the air's cool even on warm days, and there's genuine quiet here. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes, unless they're the type to stop and poke about in the undergrowth.

Timing-wise, spring's when it comes alive - the woodland floor erupts with colour and the birds are vocal. Winter's moody and atmospheric but muddy. There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's free to access, naturally, and makes a logical add-on if you're staying at Braidhaugh Holiday Lodge just down the road - three or four miles away, so easily manageable for an afternoon out.

Worth a detour? Only if you're already in the area. It's genuine woodland peace rather than a showstopper, but that's exactly what some people travel for.
