Lower Hartslock Wood

The beech woods here drop steeply down to the Thames, and on a crisp autumn morning when the light hits the golden leaves just right, it's genuinely one of the prettier stretches of Oxfordshire woodland you'll find. Lower Hartslock Wood sits just outside Wallingford - close enough for a half-day trip, far enough to feel properly remote.

The main draw is the woodland walk itself. Trees tower overhead, the path meanders downhill towards the river, and if you time it right you'll have the place largely to yourself. It's not a manicured nature reserve - there's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards - which is exactly why it works. Families with school-age kids will manage the walk fine, though the descent is steeper than it looks on the map. Bring proper boots if the ground's wet.

Allow a solid two hours if you're doing the full route down to the river and back. There's a car park at the top, and it costs nothing - just turn up. Spring's lovely here for bluebells, but honestly, late September through October when the beech trees turn is the real winner.

It pairs well with a riverside walk into Wallingford itself. Don't expect drama or facilities - it's a wood, nothing more - but sometimes that's precisely what you need.
