Lower Fishguard Harbour

The working harbour at Lower Fishguard is the real thing - not a polished tourist attraction, but an actual fishing village where boats still come and go. You'll find yourself wandering past weathered cottages, watching locals sort their catch, and stumbling upon proper cafes that serve breakfast to fishermen at 6am. The steep cobbled streets down to the water are genuinely steep, mind you. Worth the leg work though, especially on a clear morning when the light hits the water properly.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. Park yourself on a bench overlooking the harbour and you could easily spend an hour just watching the boats and the light change. Families with older kids will enjoy the scramble down the lanes and spotting the fishing activity, though toddlers might struggle with the gradients. History types will appreciate that this is where the 1797 invasion attempt by the French actually landed - proper historical weight to the spot, even if there's no visitor centre spelling it all out.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Fishguard Holiday Park is barely half a mile away, and Fishguard Bay Resort even closer in spirit - and you've got an easy base for exploring the Pembrokeshire coast. The harbour works as a proper morning visit before heading elsewhere for the day, or a sunset return when the fishing boats are coming back in. Free to visit, no opening hours to worry about. Just turn up.
