Lower Dalby Forest

You'll find yourself surrounded by proper woodland the moment you arrive at Lower Dalby Forest, just a short drive south of Pickering. This isn't some manicured tourist trap - it's a working forest with real trees, decent walking trails, and the kind of quiet you don't get in the valleys much anymore.

The forest sits within the larger Dalby Estate, and there are several routes to choose from depending on your legs and patience. The main draw is walking - anywhere from a gentle stroll to a proper hike through mixed woodland. The views open up as you gain height, and on a clear day you can clock the wider landscape stretching out. Families won't struggle here; kids get excited about woods, and there's enough space that you won't feel crowded even on a decent weekend.

Timing-wise, allow two to three hours if you're doing a decent loop. Early morning is worth the effort if you want photos without other people mucking about in shot. The nearest proper base is Pickering itself, about three miles north, and if you're staying at Vale of Pickering Caravan Park or any of the other sites dotted around the area, it's a natural addition to your park holiday rather than a long detour.

One thing worth knowing: this is a forest, not a visitor centre. There's no café, no gift shop, no coaching parties. If you're after woodland walk with proper North York Moors atmosphere and you don't mind your own company, it delivers.
