Lower Common Park

The Lower Common is a proper slice of Pembrokeshire countryside, just outside Pembroke town - the kind of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's a nature reserve that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick pit stop, with woodland paths, open grassland, and enough wildlife to keep naturalists genuinely occupied. You'll find yourself surrounded by native trees, birdsong, and the occasional burst of wildflowers depending on the season. The paths are manageable, though they can get muddy after rain, so wear proper walking boots.

This works best for anyone who actually enjoys watching birds or spotting woodland plants rather than families wanting a destination with a café and a playground. Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding - it's the sort of place where an hour becomes two hours without you noticing. History buffs get less from it, though the landscape itself tells stories if you know how to read them.

It's free to access and there's no formal opening hours - you can visit whenever suits you. Allow at least 90 minutes if you want to do the main paths properly. Winter's actually brilliant here when deciduous trees are bare and you can see through the woodland; summer draws crowds of insects and birds.

If you're staying at Windmill Hill or Sky Meadow glamping nearby, this is genuinely worth fitting in between longer outings. It's close enough to Pembroke to combine with exploring the castle town, but feels properly removed from it all.
