Low Tors

The walk up Low Tors near Castle Douglas is short enough to squeeze in before lunch, but rewarding enough to justify the trip. You're looking at maybe thirty minutes to the top if you're not dawdling, and the views across the Scottish Lowlands sprawl out properly once you reach the summit.

It's a straightforward hill walk without the drama of the higher peaks further north. The path is well-trodden and nothing too technical underfoot, which means families with decent walkers will manage it fine, though younger kids might find the final push tedious. History types won't find much narrative up here - it's more about the landscape than the stories - but the views back towards Castle Douglas and the surrounding moorland have their own appeal.
